Sidewalk Replacement on George R Fearon Residence, 631 2 Street, Brooklyn, NY

Sidewalk Replacement and Restoration on George R Fearon Residence 631 2 Street Brooklyn NY

Concrete sidewalks are an important part of New York City's infrastructure. They make it easy and safe to get to both residential and commercial properties. However, over time, they can deteriorate due to various factors, including weather, tree roots, and general wear and tear. This was the situation at George R Fearon’s property in Brooklyn, where the sidewalk had become cracked, presenting a significant trip hazard to pedestrians. Additionally, the uneven surface had compromised the sidewalks functionality and aesthetics.

Client Requirements:

George R Fearon, the property owner, reached out to Eden General Construction, Inc. for a comprehensive solution to the deteriorating sidewalk. The client requested the complete removal and replacement of the sidewalk to eliminate the hazards and restore the sidewalk's smooth surface. He also emphasized the need for careful removal and resetting the bronze medallion embedded in the sidewalk, which was of sentimental value and needed to be preserved in the exact location after the new concrete was laid.

Scope of Work

The project involved several critical steps to ensure a successful outcome:

Permit Acquisition:

Permit Acquisition

Before any physical work could begin, we needed to secure the necessary permits. Given that the property was built by J Garfield Kennedy in 1909 and its style, scale, material, and details contribute to the architectural and historical character of the historic district, the first step was to apply for a Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) permit.

This was successfully obtained after a thorough review process. Following the LPC’s approval, a permit from the Department of Transportation (DOT) for sidewalk replacement was requested to proceed with the sidewalk work.

Sidewalk Replacement:

The primary task was to replace 12 sections of the cracked and uneven sidewalk with new concrete. This involved breaking up the old concrete, clearing away debris, and preparing the area for the new pour.

Bronze Medallion Preservation

A significant challenge was the removal and resetting of a bronze medallion embedded in the old sidewalk. This medallion held personal significance for the client and needed to be preserved in its original location.

Our team meticulously removed the medallion before the old concrete was demolished. After the new concrete was poured and set, the medallion was carefully re-embedded in the same location, ensuring it retained its original appearance.

Execution

Our team followed a systematic approach to ensure the project was completed efficiently and to the client’s satisfaction:

Demolition: We began by breaking up the existing concrete sidewalk, removing all debris, and smoothing out the surface. This phase was carried out with precision to avoid any damage to the surrounding structures.

Preparation: After clearing the area, we prepared the base for the new concrete. This included checking the slope of the surface, compacting the soil, leveling the ground, adding a subbase layer to the area and then adding a bedding layer.

Concrete Pouring: Once the base was ready, the new ready-mix concrete of 4500 PSI was poured and smoothed out using a screen board and bull floats to level the concrete and eliminate the pockets. This process was carefully monitored to ensure a durable and even finish.

Medallion Resetting: After the concrete had cured sufficiently, the bronze medallion was reset into its original position. We ensured its alignment and integration are accurate and in accordance with the new sidewalk.

Restoration of the sidewalk on George R Fearon Residence was completed on time and within budget. The results were a precise, smooth, hazard-free sidewalk that significantly improved the safety and aesthetics of the property.

The bronze medallion was successfully preserved and reinstalled, much to the satisfaction of the client.

By addressing both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the sidewalk, Eden General Construction, Inc. was able to restore the area to its former glory while ensuring it remains safe and accessible for years to come.
